What did prophet Ibrahim(A.S) ask Allah in the dua above?
Prophet Ibrahim(A.S) asks for forgiveness from Allah for:
- Himself
- His parents
- The believers
As clearly stated:
“Our Lord! Forgive me and my parents and the believers on the day when the judgement will come to pass”
1st step to make dua for sick parents:
Ask Allah To Pardon You And Your Parents
One of the ways to make dua for your parents is to seek forgiveness for them.
It is a common practice amongst the prophets that they would constantly seek for Allah’s forgiveness whenever they are faced with trials and tribulations.
The dua in verse 41 was the closing dua that prophet Ibrahim Alaihi salam made after fulfilling Allah’s command to leave his son;Prophet Ismail (A.S) and his wife Sayyidah Hajar(R.A) in a barren place where there is no form of livelihood.
It is later known the hikmah(wisdom) behind this mission was rebuilding of the baytullah after it got destroyed during the flood in prophet Nuh’s(A.S) time.
After leaving his loved ones, he made a prayer facing the present baytullah(mecca) which was highlighted from verse 37-41:

The translation behind prophet Ibrahim’s beautiful dua is as follows:
verse 37:
Our Lord! I have settled some of my offspring in a barren valley, near Your Sacred House, our Lord, so that they may establish prayer. So make the hearts of ˹believing˺ people incline towards them and provide them with fruits, so perhaps they will be thankful.
verse 38:
Our Lord! You certainly know what we conceal and what we reveal. Nothing on earth or in heaven is hidden from Allah.
verse 39:
All praise is for Allah who has blessed me with Ishmael and Isaac in my old age. My Lord is indeed the Hearer of ˹all˺ prayers.
verse 40:
My Lord! Make me and those ˹believers˺ of my descendants keep up prayer. Our Lord! Accept my prayers.
verse 41:
Our Lord! Forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day when the judgment will come to pass.”

Dua For Protection From Evil Eye: The Comprehensive Guide
Have you ever heard how scary evil eyes can be? Perhaps you’ve heard a thing or 2 about what evil eye is but you are not sure how to make dua for protection from evil eye or how to best protect yourself and your loved ones?
Let’s now look at:
2. Surah al-Israa’,verse 24:

2nd step to make dua for sick parents;
Ask Allah To Bestow His Mercy Upon Them
In the previous verse (23) in surah al-isra’,
For your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And honour your parents. If one or both of them reach old age in your care, never say to them ˹even˺ ‘ugh,’ nor yell at them. Rather, address them respectfully.
Allah decreed that we :
- Worship none but HIM
- Treat our parents with (Ihsaan) kindly, gently with utmost love and appreciation.
- Give thanks to Allah and our parents
- Be dutiful to our parents
In continuation verse(24) above, Allah highlights to us that we should humble ourselves towards our parents in our interactions with them.
Then the next half of the verse talks about seeking Allah to be merciful to them as they have cared for and and loved us when we were young.
We wouldn’t know how hard it is for our parents to raise us until we ourselves became parents. Hence why in this verse Allah reminded us to seek mercy for them as they have tirelessly brought us up.
The 2 essential things in making dua for sick parents are :
- Seeking forgiveness for them.
- Seeking Allah’s Mercy for them.
Although these 2 dua are from different surah in the Quran, the scholars conclude that you can recite the 2 dua by combining them together.
Hence the following dua that was taught in the Quran can be recited for our parents’ wellbeing (especially when they have reached old age) or have returned back to Allah.
It is our duty to remember them by making a lot of supplications for them especially after the 5 daily prayers.
Dua For Sick Parents is as follows:
رَبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّ
“Our Lord! Forgive me, my parents,
وٱرْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِى صَغِيرًۭا
Be merciful to them as they raised me when I was young.”
